The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released its crash test results under the more stringent 2012 model year crash test guidelines, and 13 Toyota and Scion vehicles earned Top Safety Pick awards for the 2012 model year, more than any other automaker.

“Safety is a core value that dates back to the foundation of our company,” Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc., said. “IIHS’ awards further recognize our commitment to helping protect drivers and passengers.”

The 2012 model year winners are: Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Prius, Prius v, Sienna, Tundra Crew Cab, Venza, and Yaris; and Scion tC, xB, and xD.

According to the IIHS, Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in IIHS tests. The more stringent guidelines use a wider range of dummies to better simulate occupants of all sizes; a new side pole test simulates a car sliding sideways at 20 mph into a post or tree, uncovering potential weaknesses that the conventional barrier test cannot. Since side impacts are more likely to cause injury and fatality than frontal crashes, the new side pole test is an extremely important safety test.

We take special notice of the 2012 Toyota Camry which received a four-star Frontal Crash rating, a five-star Side Crash rating and a four-star rollover rating for an overall vehicle score of five stars.

The outstanding safety performance of the new 2012 Toyota Camry and the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid is just one of many reasons why you should consider the Camry for your next new family vehicle.
